Sociology
Our vision:
At Orsett Heath, sociology lessons empower students to understand the structure of society, and connections and patterns in human behaviour. Our sociology curriculum gives students the opportunity to focus on their own experience of the social world, whilst encouraging them to analyse and reflect on more unfamiliar parts of society. We aspire to develop students’ ‘sociological imagination’ – so that students can call certain aspects of society into question, rather than passively accepting them. Through our sociology curriculum, we hope to empower all students with the substantive and disciplinary knowledge required to overcome societal barriers and become the people they want to be.
We see our key objectives as:
- To allow students to understand the relationship between social structures and human behaviours
- To help students improve their ability to construct reasoned arguments and articulate their judgements in the written and spoken word
- To help students consider a variety of perspectives on social issues in the world around them
- To build the disciplinary knowledge required to participate fully in the academic discipline of sociology
As a department, we believe that Sociology is important to a student’s programme of study for a number of reasons:
- Students are taught to investigate facts and make deductions
- Students learn to develop informed opinions and new ideas on social issues
- Students are empowered to analyse and better understand the social world.
